Historic ODI Series Win: Black Caps Conquer India 2-1 in Indore Despite Kohli’s Valiant Century

New Zealand achieved a historic milestone, securing their maiden One-Day International (ODI) series victory on Indian soil with a 2-1 triumph over the hosts. In the decisive 3rd ODI at Indore, the Black Caps defeated India by 41 runs, overshadowing a valiant century from India’s batting stalwart, Virat Kohli.

Facing a challenging target of 338, India’s pursuit centered on Kohli’s superb 124. Despite his “fighting century,” India’s innings crumbled due to early wickets and lack of substantial partnerships. The team was eventually bowled out for 296 in 46 overs. Kohli’s individual brilliance couldn’t compensate for the collective struggle, leaving him without the necessary support to steer India to victory.

New Zealand’s formidable total of 337/8 was built on an exceptional recovery after a shaky start at 5/2. Centuries from Daryl Mitchell (137 off 131) and Glenn Phillips were instrumental. Mitchell, who starred with the bat, was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series, concluding the series with an outstanding 215 runs at an average of 176.

For India, captained by Shubman Gill, this loss marks their second consecutive ODI series defeat. Critics expressed dissatisfaction with the top-order batters’ inability to perform under pressure. New Zealand’s triumph is particularly noteworthy given their relatively inexperienced squad, with several key players missing. This landmark ODI series win, coupled with their 3-0 Test series whitewash in India in October 2024, solidifies the Black Caps’ impressive track record on Indian soil, demonstrating their growing prowess.
