India-Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026: Match Likely On, Awaiting PM Shehbaz’s Final Say

The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is now “likely to go ahead,” signalling a potential U-turn from Pakistan’s earlier boycott decision. This crucial fixture is scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi is reportedly set to request Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to withdraw the boycott. This move comes after Naqvi’s extensive discussions with the Bangladesh, Sri Lankan, and Emirates cricket boards, alongside the International Cricket Council (ICC).

ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja recently met Naqvi in Lahore. During their talks, Naqvi raised Pakistan’s concerns, including questioning the ICC’s response to Pakistan’s refusal to accept the Asia Cup trophy from an Indian official. The trophy currently remains locked at the Asian Cricket Council headquarters.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Amin ul Islam, also present in Lahore, reportedly appreciated Pakistan’s support and urged Naqvi to end the boycott. Similar appeals have come from the Sri Lankan and Emirates boards. These international pleas appear to be a key driver behind the PCB’s reconsideration.

Despite the PCB’s inclination, the final decision rests solely with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Earlier, unconfirmed reports suggested Pakistan’s conditions for reversing a boycott included demands for an increased ICC revenue share and the restoration of bilateral cricket ties with India. The backdrop includes Bangladesh’s exclusion from the World Cup for refusing to play in India due to security concerns, highlighting the intricate political dynamics impacting regional cricket.
