Piyush Goyal on India-US Trade Deal: ‘Absolute Nonsense’ to Opposition’s Sovereignty Allegations

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has vehemently dismissed opposition allegations concerning the proposed India-US trade deal, branding claims of it being an effort to surrender national sovereignty as “absolute nonsense.” Speaking on Sunday, Goyal asserted that the agreement is, in fact, a “labour of love,” meticulously forged through intense bilateral negotiations. He clarified that the deal is unequivocally designed to serve India’s national interests, specifically contributing to the ambitious goal of “Viksit Bharat 2047” – envisioning a developed and prosperous nation by 2047.

Goyal strongly criticised individuals propagating the sovereignty narrative, labelling such perspectives as originating from “pretty ignorant” people. He passionately underscored the immense opportunities the deal is poised to unlock for various segments of Indian society, including its youth, women, farmers, and fishermen. Furthermore, the minister highlighted that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across critical sectors like textiles, footwear, leather, toys, handloom, handicraft, auto components, and furniture are expected to flourish significantly. He optimistically declared that for these industries, the “sky is the limit” concerning growth potential and international market access.

Reaffirming India’s robust economic position, Goyal stated the nation would face “no problem” in purchasing goods worth $500 billion from the US over the next five years. He confidently attributed this substantial capacity to India’s rapidly burgeoning economy, which is projected to generate an estimated domestic demand of $2 trillion. Crucially, Goyal also provided firm assurances that comprehensive safeguards have been meticulously established with the US to protect the vital interests of Indian farmers and domestic industries, thereby preventing any substantial or detrimental increase in imports. This strategic partnership, he concluded, holds “unlimited potential” for significantly enhancing bilateral trade and fostering widespread economic development across numerous sectors, solidifying India’s global standing.
